Week 5 Web Conference

This conference was brief. We were reminded to make sure our CV was at the end of the Comprehensive Exam.  We were reminded to use reflections with references at the end of each of the 33 indicators.
We will be emailed our grades.  If you do not receive an A you will have a chance to make corrections or can keep your grade.

Week 4 Conference Saturday Morning

Not much to add from previous conferences just offer to help if needed. The big change is the misunderstanding that you can have 3 references for the whole Appendix G when we need to have 3 references per activity.  You can use the same write up if an indicator is used mulitple times.

Week 4 Thursday Web Conference

This confence was short.  Mostly Dr. Abernathy was there to offer support for all students.  She stated if you were a student that experienced a change in course to pick any of the courses that were substituted and reflect on one of them.
Again she offered support for student and offered her phone number to call directly if needed.

Week 4 Monday Web Conference

Week 4 Web Conference

This week’s web conference was short. Dr. Abernathy said that they will not count works on reflections for the 33 indicators for the internship. You may have three references for the whole reflection group. Make sure that your reflections are meaningful. You do not have to double space reflections.

As always she encouraged us to contact her or Dawn with questions, they are both concerned with our success of this program. They have both provided their personal phone numbers to contact them personally.

Week Three Web Conference

Week 3 Web Conference

The web conference was small this week, make sure you check the discussion boards for week 4 conference time, it will probably change to a Thursday again.

Dr. Abernathy assured students that if more time was needed to complete the comprehensive exam and ePortfolio then you would be able to request extra time. It is preferred that you complete all work by October 1 but and extension until November 1 can be given. If you plan on graduating in December then November 1 is the absolute latest you can turn in assignment and allow professor time to grade and post. You will receive and incomplete until assignments are received and graded. Epic will close on the last day of class. Any late work will have to be emailed to Dr. Abernathy.

When reflecting on your six favorite courses Dr. Abernathy suggested you reference specific assignments, standards, self-assessment, and any home, school, community connection you can make as you complete each courses reflection. She also suggested that we pay close attention to the rubrics.

Finally, she stressed that every student has the support of Dawn and herself. If you have any questions or concerns then please feel free to call or email.

Week 2 Web Conference

The web conference this week clarified several things. Dr. Abernathy stated that we should have at least ten different sources cited in our comprehensive final paper. You can use a site twice, but it will only count as one source. She asked that the sources be varied as possible and the quotes are to be unique, if possible. There is no limit to the maximum number of citations you have to have.

She stated that while it is not a requirement, it would be nice to see the assignments in the ePortfolio. The use of music, video and graphics will serve to enhance the overall presentation of the portfolio, but is not a requirement. She suggested personalizing the site to include family information, if you feel comfortable doing so.

When the course is done, we will have reflected over eight courses and eight standards. When reflecting on the courses, do not mention the assignments, but rather the learning from completing the assignments. When reflecting on the standards, you can mention any assignment that goes with the standard.

APA style and scholarly writing was stressed. Please utilize reference material to assist with the APA.

Everyone should have received an email through their Lamar account that will have a link to apply for graduation. There is a deadline, so make sure to apply. It does not matter if you are going to be present for the ceremony or not, you must still apply for graduation.

Web conference for next week will be on Thursday at 7:30 pm, instead of the usual Saturday morning conference.

A final note was given to use the discussion board for questions and help from your classmates. Both Dawn and Dr. Abernathy made sure everyone knew that they would each be available to help in any way needed.

EDLD 5370 Week One Web Conference

Week One – Part 1.1 – Reflection on Web Conference

I found that the first web conference was extremely helpful. I loved that we started off with information on how to apply for graduation, through contacting Student Services at luacademic@lamar.edu . I cannot believe that eighteen months have gone by and I am near completion of the program.

We discussed that it was up to each student to decide to create a new wiki, or to simply use their existing wiki. Examples are to be given by Dr. Abernathy regarding the correct procedure to set up a professional wiki. Any wiki format may be chosen, but Dr. Abernathy asked to make it a public format so that others can look at the work produced.

The comprehensive final was discussed. It is a continual work in progress, with each week adding to the previous until week five, when it should be complete. While a student’s grades are important, it is only the end grade that will count. Included in the final will be a reference section, and the curriculum vitae will appear as an appendix. The e-portfolio will be worth 600 points and the comprehensive final will be worth 400 points.

Students were reminded to be sure to utilize three references for reflections and prepare the reflections using the APA format! Dawn, our IA, was also on the conference and it was encouraging that she is involved and committed to our success. She shared contact information with us for more personal help, if needed.

There were concerns voiced on the amount of work involved in this course. The class was encouraged to work diligently, and indications were that if effort is put forth, the student would realize successful course and program completion. Students were reminded they need only to contact Dr. Abernathy or Dawn and they will try to facilitate a thorough understanding of the material, should additional time to achieve this be required.
